Mutual Exchange Information

What is a Mutual Exchange?
This is a swap between two or more social housing tenants who have agreed to exchange to each others properties on a permanent basis, all parties involved will have to sign a new tenancy agreement with their new landlords.

How long does it take to Exchange?
It will take on average 6 weeks from the day all parties hand in their paperwork to their landlords.

If I have rent arrears can I still Exchange?
No, you will need to clear your rent before you can exchange.

Is it free to exchange?
No legal fees are involved. It is free of charge.

Will I have the Right to buy if I swap?
Please check with your respective landlord as each landlord may have a different policy.

Can I form a chain to complete a swap, as I can not find a direct move?
Yes this is possible as long as all parties in the chain are in agreement.

Can I move anywhere?
You can move anywhere within England Scotland Wales and Northern Ireland including off shore Islands, not including the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands.

Can I pay someone to exchange with me?
No, it is illegal. Which means you and your family could be evicted from your property if you offer a cash incentive or a reward for moving.

Do I need my landlord's permission to swap?
Yes, you will need to fill in paperwork and await a decision on a move; if you don't you will be liable for eviction and a fine.

On what grounds can my landlord refuse permission?
